The earth gives slightly as she steps on the damp cool grass. Her feet start losing traction against the surface of her sandals as they get slicker with each wet step. Spring is officially here.
She finds her way to the bench where she plops down in the small patch of sun. She has her headphones on, deaf to the world, but her eyes take it all in. A smile lights up her face as she watches a kite finally take flight much to the delight of a struggling kid. She digs into her bag and pulls out a book. She wants to lose herself from this world without being alone. She’s looking at text on the pages but is seeing a whole other world. She loves the feeling of being alone yet in such close proximity to others. There is a certain freedom in it. A light, bright, happy freedom. Not the dark lonely place you go when you’re alone holed up in your own room.
She’s been working on bringing this light, bright feeling to her home. She’s almost been successful but her bedroom still harbors dark corners that creep out and spread with the dusk in the evening.
But she hopes being able to throw open the windows and doing a thorough spring cleaning will remedy that.
I’m excited to announce I’ll be running the NYC marathon this year for the Alzheimer’s Association. Along with my training I need to raise $3500 for my cause. I accepted my spot on the team Athletes to End Alzheimer’s officially on Friday and started my training on Saturday with a 7.25 mile run. I’m a bit nervous because I have never run further than a 13.1 miles. I know that I can run a marathon if I train but what I’m not so sure about is committing to my training. A half is easy, you can slack and run a half. Not that I’d recommend it. But a full. There is no room for slacking.
So if anyone in the NYC wants a running buddy, hit me up.
If you’re trying to make plans with me the next few weeks and they don’t involve hockey the answer is no. I love hockey (you should know this by now). Playoffs started yesterday and I spent 5.5 hours watching hockey last night and was up past midnight. Yes, I did get a venti coffee this morning. And chugged it.
I’m obviously rooting for MN Wild to all the way. But you might catch me rooting for Calgary Flames and the New York Islanders. Woot! Woot!
Did you set your brackets? Because I did. Here’s my round 1.
So tell me who you’re rooting for (please don’t say the Rangers).
And in the spirit of playoffs, here are some of my favorite hockey links:
If you don’t know about this site: We Just Scored, then you’re missing out. You can listen to your favorite team’s goal horn and song. Don’t ask me how often I actually do this (let’s just say often).
Hockey jokes ’nuff said. I find them all hilarious.
Also the Bleacher Buddy app (Android & Apple) is my favorite for finding which channel the game is on. Works for all sports – including college. Just enter your zip code and TV provider to find the game. Easy to change if you’re bar hopping and need to find the channel for them. Surprisingly, a lot of NYC bars don’t just automatically play MN hockey, who woulda thunk it?
And if you don’t really care much about hockey at least check out the hot players this Buzzfeed article compiled.
